How Much Caffeine Is in a Cup of Coffee?
Share
Caffeine is probably the reason most of us start the day with coffee — but the amount in your cup varies more than you'd think. Here's a realistic breakdown.
Typical caffeine by brew
- Drip coffee (8 oz): roughly 95–165 mg
- Pour-over (8 oz): roughly 90–150 mg
- French press (8 oz): roughly 80–135 mg
- Espresso (1 oz shot): roughly 60–75 mg
- Cold brew (8 oz): often 150–240 mg, since it's brewed strong
Does dark roast have less caffeine?
Barely. Roast level has a very small effect on caffeine. By weight, light and dark are nearly identical; by scoop, dark roast beans are a touch less dense, so you might get marginally less. The bigger factors are how much coffee you use and how it's brewed.
What actually changes the number
Dose (more grounds = more caffeine), brew time and temperature, grind size, and cup size all matter more than roast. A big mug of strong cold brew can easily have two to three times the caffeine of a single espresso.
