How to Froth Milk Without an Espresso Machine
Share
Café-style frothed milk at home doesn't require an espresso machine. With a few common tools you can get creamy, foamy milk for lattes and cappuccinos. Here are four methods, easiest first.
1. The jar method
Fill a jar no more than a third with milk, screw the lid on tight, and shake hard for 30–60 seconds. Remove the lid and microwave for about 30 seconds to stabilize the foam. Simple and surprisingly effective.
2. Handheld frother
A cheap battery-powered frother works wonders. Warm the milk first, then whisk with the frother near the surface to pull in air, then deeper to create a whirlpool for smooth texture.
3. French press
Add warm milk to a clean French press (no more than a third full) and pump the plunger up and down quickly for 30–60 seconds. Great for larger volumes.
4. Whisk on the stove
Warm the milk in a saucepan and whisk vigorously by hand. Low-tech but it works in a pinch.
A tip for the best foam
Cold, fresh milk froths best, and whole milk gives the creamiest texture. For barista-style drinks, pair your foam with a strong Moka pot or AeroPress brew from freshly roasted beans.
