How to Store Coffee to Keep It Fresh Longer
Share
Fresh coffee makes a better cup — but how you store it matters just as much as how you brew it. Here's how to keep your beans tasting their best for as long as possible.
The 4 enemies of fresh coffee
Coffee goes stale fastest when exposed to air, moisture, heat, and light. Beat those four and your coffee stays fresh far longer.
Where to store coffee
- Keep it in an airtight container, ideally opaque.
- Store it in a cool, dark spot — a pantry or cupboard, away from the stove and sunlight.
- Leave it in the original bag if it has a one-way valve and reseals well.
Should you freeze coffee?
You can, but do it right: freeze in a truly airtight container, in portions you'll use, and don't refreeze. Condensation is the enemy — let a portion come to room temperature before opening. For most people, a cool pantry is simpler and just as good.
Whole bean vs ground
Whole beans stay fresh much longer than ground, because grinding exposes far more surface area to air. If freshness is your goal, buy whole bean coffee and grind right before brewing.
Buy fresh, buy smaller
The best storage trick is buying fresh and often. All of ours are roasted to order, so you're starting as fresh as possible — then just buy an amount you'll finish in a few weeks. Browse the coffee collection and keep your rotation fresh.
