Whole Bean vs Ground Coffee: Which Should You Buy?

Every bag of coffee comes with a choice: whole bean or ground? Both make great coffee, but there's a real difference in freshness and flavor. Here's how to decide.

Why whole bean stays fresher

The moment coffee is ground, it starts losing flavor — fast. Grinding exposes far more surface area to air, so ground coffee goes stale in days while whole beans stay fresh for weeks. If you want the best-tasting cup, whole bean wins, because you grind only what you need, right before brewing.

When ground coffee makes sense

Ground coffee is all about convenience. If you don't have a grinder, or you want a grab-and-go option, pre-ground is perfectly good — just buy smaller amounts and use it up within a couple of weeks. We grind to order for your brew method, so it arrives fresh.

How to choose

  • Have a grinder (or want the freshest cup)? Buy whole bean.
  • Want convenience? Buy ground — and pick the grind that matches your brewer (drip, espresso, French press, etc.).

Either way, buy fresh

Freshness beats everything. All of our coffee is roasted to order, so whether you choose whole bean or ground, you're starting fresh. Browse the coffee collection and pick your grind at checkout.
